You've probably heard of Los Cabos, Mexico. It’s internationally known because it’s one of the top tourist destinations in North America. It is not only popular for its beautiful beaches, but also for its great tourism infrastructure. In addition to the most recognized hotel chains in the world, you will also find excellent restaurants, bars, a large marina, shopping centers, countless tours, and many other activities.
Based on all of the above, it is one of the best places to visit in Mexico, but where is Los Cabos exactly? The first thing you need to know to locate it is that Mexico has two peninsulas: Baja California in the northwest and Yucatan in the southeast of the country. Baja California borders the United States of America to the north, while Yucatan borders Guatemala and Belize, located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
As we said, the Baja California Peninsula begins at the border of the United States, just below the state of California. Just 18 miles south of San Diego is one of the most famous Mexico destinations: Tijuana. From that point, the peninsula extends approximately 667 miles to the south and is surrounded by the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The Baja California Peninsula is divided into two states: Baja California to the north, whose capital is Mexicali, and Baja California Sur, whose capital is La Paz. The latter, as its name indicates, comprises approximately from the middle to the southern tip of the peninsula. The body of water located between the peninsula and the mainland of Mexico is known as the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortez. It is on this coastal strip that some of the best beach vacation spots are located.
Before proceeding, it should be clarified that Los Cabos is not a place, but a region between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Many people think Los Cabos is the same as Cabo San Lucas because this city is one of the top tourist destinations in Los Cabos. This is because the main hotels, restaurants, and bars in the region are concentrated there, as well as a large marina, shopping centers, and, of course, the infamous Cabo San Lucas Arch.
But in reality, it is the group of attractions and tourist services offered in the whole region that make Los Cabos one of the best places to visit in Mexico. Visit El Medano, El Chileno, Palmilla, and El Tule beaches; do the camel or ATV tours through the desert; the underwater wonders in Cabo Pulmo National Park and the colorful streets of San Jose del Cabo await you!
There are also many important hotels along the tourist corridor from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo such as Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa. If you see the Los Cabos map you will find that all of these places are relatively close.
Let’s see if we have this clear, so, where is Los Cabos? As already noted, Los Cabos is considered to be the entire tourist corridor located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. These two Mexican destinations are at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, approximately 20 miles from each other.
Cabo San Lucas is located in the part of the peninsula where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. To be precise, these immense bodies of water are intertwined where the ancient rock formation known as “The End of the World” plus the Arch of Cabo San Lucas are found.
San Jose del Cabo is an average of 30 minutes traveling east on the Transpeninsular Highway. Although both are considered the main tourist destinations in the region, all the beach vacation resorts in between are part of Los Cabos. Check them out and get to know some of the best places to visit in Mexico. You don't really need a Los Cabos map to do this as everything is perfectly signposted and if you need a little guidance, you can use Google Maps. Let the adventure begin!
